About Writer

In the year 1893, Pt. Shiv Nandan Thakur graced this world, hailing from the erudite village of Koilakh in the then Darbhanga District of the United East Province, during the historical undivided Bengal – Bihar – Odissa period. His academic journey unfolded through the disciplined pursuit of knowledge in Sanskrit, English, and Hindi at esteemed institutions, including the Bengal Sanskrit Association, Punjab University, Kolkata University, and Patna University. Acknowledged as an esteemed Sanskrit scholar, he imparted his knowledge as a dedicated educator at Zila School (now Gardanibagh High School) in Patna and Zila School in Bhagalpur.

Pt. Thakur’s life underwent a profound transformation following his attendance at a lecture delivered by the distinguished linguist Shri Narendra Nath Gupta in the Senate Hall of Patna University on the 2nd of February 1934. Galvanized by this enlightening event, Pt. Thakur committed himself zealously to the exploration of concealed manuscripts and verses (Padavali) attributed to the venerable Maithili poet Mahakavi Vidyapati. Despite Pt. Thakur’s departure from this mortal realm in 1939, his dedicated disciple and the inaugural editor, Shri Jaidev Mishra, relentlessly pursued the scholarly endeavor, ultimately realizing the publication of the book in 1941 after several years of assiduous analysis.
