About Books

This book is a welcome contribution to the economic history of Mithila generally in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but more specifically between 1860 when the Darbhanga Raj was placed under the Court of Wards and 1952 when the Zamindari abolition and Land Reforms Act,1951 was enforced.
The book takes a look at the economic life and state of affairs in the Mithila region during the period of high water of British colonial domination through various chapters that draw attention to the evils of revenue collection system, overall agrarian troubles and tension , the deplorable condition of the peasants and the agricultural labourers, the evil influence of thriving userer and trader class and such others.
The merit of the book lies in the fact that it is based on hitherto largely untapped archival sources stacked in the Maharajadhiraj Rameshwar Singh Regional Archives, Darbhanga that lend credibility to the book. The painstaking efforts of the author are praiseworthy.

Professor Ratneshwar Mishra,
Former Head, University Department of History, Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga
